Target

Once upon a time in a land far, far away (1989 on the Isle of Wight, UK), a younger Bruce Goldsmith toiled night and day, cramming all his ideas into the Black Magic. This paraglider was to fulfill his dreams and take him into the history books.BGD Epic EN-B glider

Now, with the EPIC, fellow pilots can follow on his flight path and embark on their own epic journey. If the passion for flight burns inside you, the EPIC will set you free with, literally, flying colours. The EPIC is ideal for pilots about to leave their house thermal for the first time, and a fun all-rounder for seasoned pilots.BGD Epic EN-B glider

Features

Impeccable Spiral Behaviour

The spiral behaviour is astounding – spiral stability can be a problem with low aspect-ratio beginner wings, but BGDhave tested the paraglider extensively, with different inclinations and sink rates, and never, ever has it stayed in a spiral, once! This is very unusual for a school glider and is a big safety bonus.BGD Epic EN-B glider

Baby A-Riser

BGD has added a ‘big ears’ A riser which is also on a ½ ratio with the rest of the A lines. This facilitates easy use of big ears while helping speed and stability while on bar. The speed system is light and simple without reflex really helping glide at speed.

Snap Locks

BGD Fly

Snap Locks are lightweight, compact attachments that effortlessly connect the brakes to the risers. A small focused magnet inside the catch and an internal locking system hold the handle in place, releasing only if the handles are pulled down towards the pilot. This unique design feature means the handles don’t fall off while kiting, packing, or performing manoeuvres. The Snap Lock system solves many of the problems associated with press-studs and magnets.

Progressive Stability

Progressive Stability Of The Bgd Epic

Progressive stability has been designed into all our gliders to help pilots feel turbulence and avoid it. This makes for safer and more comfortable flying.

Cord Cut Billow (CCB)

Cord Cut Billow On The Bgd Epic Paraglider

Cord Cut Billow technology has been developed to improve the form friction, glider stability and overall performance of our paragliders. Two seams run chord-wise across the top panels of the leading edge to accommodate the panel ballooning that happens when the wing is inflated. Up to five centimetres of excess material is created on the sides of an inflated flat panel bending over a wing profile. Cord Cut Billow technology absorbs the material with a 3D panel resulting in fewer ripples and improved rib profile shape and stability.

Weight-Optimised Ribs

Weight Optimised Ribs On The Bgd Epic Paraglider

BGD has maintained the strength and rigidity of the ribs while removing unnecessary material. This means less weight for no increase in cost or reduction in strength of the wing. The hole positioning and size depends on the loads taken locally by the sail, and it is thanks to recent developments in our software that it is now possible to accurately calculate this.BGD Epic beginner paraglider

Triple Finger Diagonals

Triple Finger Diagonals On The Bgd Epic Paraglider

Across the whole chord of the profile, BGD has designed three-piece diagonal supports that pass through the holes in other ribs. They ensure structural integrity by avoiding cloth bias from the ribs and creating a more solid wing even when the brake is applied. This is particularly important near the trailing edge since the profile is thin and the diagonal ribs are shallow supporting higher loads.

Optimized Line Layout BGD Fly

Optimised Line Layout Of The Bgd Epic

Over the years BGD has perfected our system of optimising the line layout of our wings. BGD use numerous equations, software, and the plain old guess-and-check method to build BGD line layouts. The result is simple: fewer lines making stronger, faster gliders

Designers Notes BGD Fly

I know how privileged I am to have found such an extraordinary sport. During my own journey I have worked out exactly what a pilot preparing to embark on their own such voyage needs. I wrote a list of requirements and designed the EPIC with this in mind.

The easy aspect ratio of 5.0 is the perfect balance between safety and performance. With only 42 optimised cells the EPIC is a simple, rugged, and very clean paraglider. I gave the EPIC an easy pitch profile and arc for a high degree of passive safety, allowing the pilot to concentrate on the flying.

I wish I could have had an EPIC when my story began! – Bruce, BGD

Safety During Flight with the BGD Epic Paraglider

Flying safely isn’t just about having the right gear—it’s about understanding your wing, respecting conditions, and building smart habits in the air. Fortunately, the BGD Epic Paraglider is designed with safety at its core. It empowers you to explore while giving you peace of mind.

1. Passive Safety That Protects Without Restriction

Engineered as an EN/LTF-B wing, the Epic blends dynamic handling with high resistance to collapses. It maintains internal pressure even in active air, allowing newer pilots to navigate turbulence without panic. Because the wing reacts predictably, recovery from disturbances is smooth and manageable.BGD Epic

2. Feedback That Builds Awareness

As you fly, the Epic communicates clearly—but never aggressively. It helps you learn active flying techniques through direct yet gentle feedback. You’ll feel lift and turbulence in a way that sharpens your instincts instead of overwhelming your senses.BGD Epic

3. Behavior in Turbulence

In choppy conditions, the Epic remains composed. Pitch movements are limited, and collapses—though rare—are typically mild and easily recovered with minimal pilot input. This makes it ideal for pilots transitioning from school wings who still value a forgiving response.BGD Epic

Top Safety Features That Inspire Confidence

Trust in these key design elements that make every flight with the Epic secure and enjoyable:

  • Shark Nose Leading Edge – Maintains pressure at all angles of attack

  • Progressive Brake Travel – Wide range before stall, giving more margin

  • Reinforced Structure – Maintains shape even in turbulent air

  • Line Plan Simplicity – Reduces complexity during preflight and maneuvers

  • Low Aspect Ratio – Enhances stability and reduces the chance of tip collapses

  • Stall Resistance – Smooth brake travel helps prevent accidental deep stalls

  • Calm Recovery Behavior – Reacts gently to disturbances, ideal for new thermalling pilots

Tips for Flying Safely with the BGD Epic

Check Before You Launch

  • Always lay out your wing in a horseshoe or rosette to prevent line tangles.

  • Verify risers are not twisted and brake handles are properly attached.

  • Look over your lines and cloth for wear or damage before every session.

Match Conditions to Your Skill Level

  • While the Epic can handle varied weather, choose mellow days if you’re still building confidence.

  • Avoid gusty, strong-wind launches until you’re fully proficient in ground handling.

  • Use certified reserve parachutes and always wear a helmet, gloves, and boots.

Use Active Piloting in Thermals

  • Stay relaxed but alert.

  • Apply gentle brake inputs to dampen surges, and lean into turns for balance.

  • Don’t overreact—let the Epic’s natural stability guide your corrections.

Know Your Limits and Practice Smart Decision-Making

  • Set a personal ceiling for wind strength and thermal activity until you gain experience.

  • Land early if conditions change rapidly.

  • Trust your instincts—if it feels wrong, it probably is.

Emergency Readiness and Maneuver Control

Collapse Response

Although rare, collapses are part of flight reality. Thankfully, the Epic responds in a controlled and docile manner. Most frontal or asymmetric collapses reinflate quickly with minimal input.

Big Ears and B-Line Techniques

The wing supports big ears for quick descent. They are easy to initiate and stable during use. B-line stalls are also possible, though rarely necessary with modern descent planning.Epic paraglider by BGD

Spiral Dive Control

When entering spirals, the Epic maintains excellent pitch control and predictable G-force build-up. It exits spirals without delay—an essential trait for safer descent and energy management.Epic paraglider by BGD

Your Safety Partner in the Sky

The BGD Epic Paraglider isn’t just about performance or play—it’s a wing that grows with you, keeping safety central at every stage. From beginner thermals to cross-country dreams, it allows you to explore with full control, total clarity, and unwavering confidence.

Because safe flying isn’t a limitation—it’s the freedom to enjoy every moment aloft with trust in your equipment.
