TARGET

If you fly already, you’ll know it – that feeling. The first time your feet leave the ground, the thrill of gliding through the air extinguishing any clammy pre-launch nerves. The pure joy of free flight!

The feeling grows, flight after flight, spilling over like Grimm’s Magic Porridge Pot, never running out. The Magic is the perfect partner, from a pilot’s first fly-downs until they are confidently soaring, thermalling and exploring. EN/LTF-A security keeps them safe while BGD handling and solid performance encourage confident progression.

The Magic is a wing for pilots to train on, and to keep progressing on long after their school days are behind them.

DESIGNER’S NOTES

With the Magic I wanted to design the perfect glider for a student to learn on and then to continue to progress with after school, a One Glider concept. The Magic has the safety beginners need, and will continue to look after them as they grow in confidence and become more adventurous.magic gliders

Its spiral behaviour is astounding! Spiral stability can be a problem with low aspect-ratio beginner wings, but we have tested the Magic extensively with different inclinations and sink rates, and never, ever has it stayed in a spiral, once! This is very unusual for a school glider and is a big safety bonus.magic gliders

The brake travel to the stall point is long (72cm) so pilots won’t find themselves accidentally stalling or spinning the wing either. In short I am very.magic gliders

BGD MAGIC EN/LTF-A Paraglider Safety Guide

Fly Smart, Stay Safe, and Soar With Confidence

While the BGD MAGIC is engineered with top-tier passive safety, responsible piloting is always the best safeguard. Whether you’re a student, weekend pilot, or low-airtime flyer, following a solid safety protocol ensures that every flight ends with a smile—and not a scare.

This safety guide will walk you through the essential habits, decision-making strategies, and mindset you need to pair with your MAGIC for a long, secure, and empowering flight career.

🧠 1. Mindset Before Flight

A Safe Pilot Begins With a Safe Headspace

No glider—no matter how beginner-friendly—can replace good judgment. Your mental state directly affects how you fly. Before heading to launch, ask yourself the most critical question: “Should I fly today?”

✅ Mental Safety Checklist:

  • Are you well-rested and focused?

  • Have you eaten and hydrated adequately?

  • Are you free of stress, distraction, or pressure to “just get a flight in”?

  • Do you feel confident—not just capable?

Tip: If you hesitate, wait. The sky will always be there. The best pilots know when not to fly.

🌦️ 2. Weather Awareness

Fly in Conditions That Match Your Experience

The MAGIC performs wonderfully in a wide range of conditions, but new pilots should avoid active air, gust fronts, or turbulence. Because weather is dynamic, it should never be an afterthought.

✅ Safe Weather Parameters for BGD MAGIC:

  • Wind: 5–20 km/h (3–12 mph) is ideal for students

  • Thermals: Mild thermic activity is acceptable for post-school pilots

  • Gusts: Avoid flying when gust differential exceeds 10 km/h

  • Clouds: Steer clear of dark, fast-growing cumulus or lenticulars

  • Rain: Never fly in precipitation—wet canopies behave unpredictably

Tip: Use apps like Windy, XCWeather, and local forecasts. Ask instructors or club mates for local wind nuances.

🪢 3. Pre-Flight Equipment Check

Inspect With Intention, Not Assumption

The MAGIC’s design keeps things simple, but it still demands a full pre-flight inspection—every time. Pilots must own the habit of checking gear with care.

✅ Pre-Flight Gear Protocol:

  • Lines free from knots, twists, or wear

  • Canopy laid out symmetrically and cleanly

  • Risers correctly connected and untangled

  • Harness properly adjusted, buckled, and secure

  • Reserve container sealed and handle visible

  • Helmet fitted and chin strap fastened

Tip: Use the “5-point check”: Wing, Lines, Risers, Harness, Helmet.

🧭 4. Launch Site Evaluation

Assess Terrain, Wind, and Escape Routes

Not every hill is MAGIC-ready. Always evaluate the layout and conditions of your takeoff zone—before even touching your gear.

✅ Safe Launch Site Conditions:

  • Slope is clean, grassy, and free of obstacles

  • Wind direction is consistent and directly uphill

  • Sufficient runway to build speed in light wind

  • No rotor-producing terrain (trees, cliffs, buildings) nearby

  • Multiple emergency landing options visible from launch

Tip: If it looks sketchy, it is. Don’t hesitate to walk away.

✈️ 5. In-Flight Safety Habits

Stay Ahead of the Wing

While the MAGIC is exceptionally forgiving, all wings demand active piloting. You should always be ahead of the wing in decision-making and aware of your surroundings.

✅ Core In-Flight Safety Practices:

  • Maintain active brake pressure—feel the air

  • Avoid deep brake or sudden inputs

  • Keep eyes scanning: other pilots, terrain, sky

  • Maintain safe separation (20–30 meters minimum)

  • Never fly into clouds or near power lines

  • Know your altitude, landing plan, and escape routes

Tip: Fly with a flight deck that includes an altimeter or app. Awareness = confidence.

🧯 6. Emergency Preparedness

Hope for the Best. Train for the Worst.

The BGD MAGIC is designed to prevent collapse, but it’s still essential to know what to do if the unexpected happens. From minor asymmetric tucks to terrain challenges, preparation saves lives.

✅ What to Practice and Know:
